  • Cleaning and caring for your vinyl

Cleaning vinyl records is essential for maintaining sound quality and preserving the lifespan of your collection. Here’s a simple guide:

    Materials Needed:
    • Anti-static brush or microfibre cloth

    • Record cleaning solution (commercially available or homemade)

    • Soft, lint-free cloths or paper towels

    • Record cleaning machine (optional)

    • Wooden or plastic spatula (for homemade solutions)

    Step-by-Step Cleaning Process:

    1. Dust Off: Use an anti-static brush or a microfibre cloth to gently remove dust and debris from the surface of the record. Always brush in a circular motion, following the grooves.

    2. Prepare Cleaning Solution:

    • Homemade Solution: Mix distilled water with a few drops of dish soap and a splash of isopropyl alcohol. Avoid using too much alcohol as it can damage the vinyl.
    • Commercial Solutions: Use a product specifically designed for cleaning records.

    3. Apply the Solution:

    • If using a cloth, dampen it with the cleaning solution (do not soak it).
    • Alternatively, spray the solution directly onto the record surface (avoid the label).

    4. Clean the Record:

    • Use a soft cloth to gently wipe the record in a circular motion, following the grooves. This helps lift dirt without scratching the surface.
    • For stubborn spots, let the solution sit for a minute before wiping.

    5. Rinse (Optional): If you used a homemade solution, you may want to rinse the record with distilled water to remove any soap residue. Just be careful not to get water on the label.

    6. Dry the Record: Use a separate clean, dry cloth to carefully dry the record, again following the grooves. Allow it to air dry completely before storing or playing.

    7. Store Properly: Once cleaned, store records upright in a cool, dry place, and use protective sleeves to prevent dust accumulation.

    Additional Tips:
    • Regular maintenance can prevent buildup.
    • Avoid using harsh chemicals or paper towels that may scratch the vinyl.
    • If possible, invest in a record cleaning machine for deeper cleaning.

With proper care, your vinyl records will sound great and last for years!
