I'm sitting in the Whiskey a Go Go, Los Angeles, and The Flock are making their West Coast debut at long last. It seems sort of strange that I should be writing a liner for a band that I've only heard three times before this night. Those three times happened in Chicago (their home-town) earlier this year when we shared the bill at Aaron Russo's Kinetic Playground. When I heard them then, I got close to going berserk over their prodigious and varied musical talent, as a whole and individually. Unfortunately, sometimes in this day and age of hype and undeserved glory for the mediocre, really good musicians are often overlooked. However, I am motivated to write these few scattered thoughts by the impatience I feel as I wait for The Flock to make it up front where it counts--I really am impressed to the point of wanting to shout praises for a band that is in the process of presenting to us all an exciting new direction in contemporary music: a subtle fusion of sounds drawn from the bedrock of blues, jazz, gospel, rock, country and many other sources. Two months ago I heard The Flock, and they have, if anything, become more exciting and stimulating since then. I truly feel that their music should not be now that it is available to everyone with the release of this album. Two months ago I was telling the gentlemen of the British press that The Flock was the best band I'd heard in America. After tonight's show of force, I am very happy to repeat that personal evaluation. For what it is worth then, all the musicians of The Flock have my hearty endorsement and solid support. I wish them all the luck they deserve... John Mayall"
